Starfish Legends: An aboriginal Australian fable relates that some animals needed a canoe to cross the ocean.  The Whale had one but refused to use it so Starfish distracted the Whale by telling stories and grooming it while the other animals stole the canoe.  When the Whale realized the trick, it beat Starfish ragged which is the reason for its appearance.  Starfish also play a prominent role in Hawaiian culture as described in that culture’s The Creation Song which describes the Starfish as one of the first “uncreated gods” of Hawaii.  More recently, the starfish Patrick Star is the best friend of SpongeBob SquarePants.
